‘This definitely falls into the scary category’: researchers warn of 50 million exposed devices

Bugs in widely used networking technology expose tens of millions of personal computers, printers and storage drives to attack by hackers over the regular internet, researchers with a security software maker said.

The problem lies in computer routers and other networking equipment that use a commonly employed standard known as Universal Plug and Play or UPnP. UPnP makes it easy for networks to identify and communicate with equipment, reducing the amount of work it takes to set up networks.

The flaws could allow hackers to access confidential files, steal passwords, take full control over PCs as well as remotely access devices such as webcams, printers and security systems.

Security software maker Rapid7 said in a white paper released on Tuesday in the US that it discovered between 40 million and 50 million devices that were vulnerable to attack due to three separate sets of problems that the firm’s researchers have identified with the UPnP standard.

The long list of devices includes products from manufacturers including Belkin, D-Link, Cisco’s Linksys division and Netgear.

Representatives for Belkin, D-Link, Linksys and Netgear could not be reached for comment on Monday evening US time.

Chris Wysopal, chief technology officer of security software firm Veracode, said he believed that publication of Rapid7’s findings would draw widespread attention to the still emerging area of UPnP security, prompting other security researchers to search for more bugs in UPnP.

“This definitely falls into the scary category,” said Wysopal, who reviewed Rapid7’s findings ahead of their publication. “There is going to be a lot more research on this. And the follow-on research could be a lot scarier.”

Rapid7 has privately alerted electronics makers about the problem through the CERT Coordination Centre, a group at the Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute that helps researchers report vulnerabilities to affected companies.

“This is the most pervasive bug I’ve ever seen,” said HD Moore, chief technology officer for Rapid7. He discussed the research with Reuters late on Monday US time.

Moore, who created a widely used platform known as Metasploit that allows security experts to simulate network attacks, said that he expected CERT to release a public warning about the flaw on Tuesday. A spokesman for the CERT Coordination Centre declined to comment.

A source with a networking equipment maker confirmed they had been alerted that CERT would issue an advisory on Tuesday and that companies were preparing to respond.

Taking control

The flaws could allow hackers to access confidential files, steal passwords, take full control over PCs as well as remotely access devices such as webcams, printers and security systems, according to Rapid7.

Moore said that there were bugs in most of the devices he tested and that device manufacturers will need to release software updates to remedy the problems.

He said that is unlikely to happen quickly.

In the meantime, he advised computer users to quickly use a free tool released by Rapid7 to identify vulnerable gear, then disable the UPnP functionality in that equipment.

Moore said hackers have not widely exploited the UPnP vulnerabilities to launch attacks, but both Moore and Wysopal expected they may start to do so after the findings are publicized.

Still, Moore said he decided to disclose the flaws in a bid to pressure equipment makers to fix the bugs and generally pay more attention to security.

People who own devices with UPnP enabled may not be aware of it because new routers, printers, media servers, web cameras, storage drives and “smart” or web-connected TVs are often shipped with that functionality turned on by default.

“You can’t stay silent about something like this,” he said. “These devices seem to have had the same level of core security for decades. Nobody seems to really care about them.”

Veracode’s Wysopal said that some hackers have likely already exploited the flaws to launch attacks, but in relatively small numbers, choosing victims one at a time.

“If they are going after executives and government officials, then they will probably look for their home networks and exploit this vulnerability,” he said.

Rapid7 is advising businesses and consumers alike to disable UPnP in devices that they suspect may be vulnerable to attack. The firm has released a tool to help identify those devices on its website.

Free Peoples of the World Should Never Let this Happen!

Why would allegedly free democratic governments, have a need to gather data on its citizens? To what end, do these governments need this information, if not to control its citizens?

As democratic governments collect this information, they become EXACTLY like oppressive regimes of governments that have tortured, murdered, and in many other ways, reduced its citizens to terrified beings.

Have we not learned anything from history? Have we not seen the parallels as written in George Orwell’s terrifying book ‘1984‘ with what has proven to exist now, in these modern times, in countries like Libya, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, China, Indonesia, and many many others.

We cannot let Government’s have this control over our lives! Information leads to knowledge, and knowledge is power! And it SHOULD NEVER BE A ONE WAY STREET!

We must protect our rights to be free! Millions of our soldiers, our sons and daughters, and fathers and mothers, have died, just so that we could be free! That is why we have Remembrance Day, and that is why we have Anzac Day! To honour our service men and women who died, or suffered horrific physical and mental injuries, so that we could all be free!

Do not EVER, let their deaths have been in vain! Their lives wasted!

We should let our government representatives, the PEOPLE WE ELECTED, know that certain things are simply unacceptable!

To let Governments, and other organisations to gather information, that would enable them to CONTROL us, would be a crime against humanity!

Web inventor warns against data storage

Date

A moment with Sir Tim Berners-Lee

Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web sits down to talk about the web today.

THE founder of the world wide web has sounded a warning about the dangers posed by governments intent on increasing the level of monitoring and filtering of the online activity of citizens.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee said that while it was important to fight serious organised crime and for a state to defend itself against cyber attack, there were enormous negatives associated with excessive government oversight of digital activity.

He believes that stored information is so dangerous, it can be likened to dynamite.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee.Web founder Sir Tim Berners-Lee. Photo: Brendan Esposito

”The whole thing seems to me fraught with massive dangers and I don’t think it’s a good idea,” he said in reply to a question about the Australian government’s data retention plan.

Sir Tim was speaking in Sydney at the launch of the CSIRO’s $40 million Digital Productivity and Services Flagship, a research facility focused on the digital economy and exploiting the full potential of the National Broadband Network.

Under the data retention proposal, internet service providers and telecommunication operators would be required to capture the online data of all Australians and store it for up to two years.

”That [stored] information is so dangerous, you have to think of it as dynamite,” he said.

He said while it was possible for a government to set up a watchdog to ensure that the stored information was not used, he was not yet aware of any government that had successfully introduced such a system.

During his hour-long talk Sir Tim also raised a red flag about web filtering.

“I have a worry that a government is liable to take too much control; maybe to spy, maybe to block,” he said. “So beware of a government that has the ability to control what you see on the web.”

His comments were made at the same event where Communication Minister Stephen Conroy, the architect of a controversial web filtering plan, had spoken earlier. The plan was officially put on the back burner late last year.

The CSIRO centre will assist the public and private sectors to develop and deliver more efficient and innovative digitally enhanced services by harnessing data.

Vegetarians beware: bread made from chickens

Bad news for vegetarians: a food additive commonly used in commercial baking is derived from chicken feathers.

Follow us on Twitter: @y7lifestyle

A chicken sandwich is one thing, but for many people eating bread made with a food additive derived from chickens is another.

Food additive L-cysteine is a processing aid used in baking, which acts as a reducing agent by breaking up dough’s protein network to reduce mixing time, elasticity and proofing time.

The only thing is, L-cysteine is obtained industrially from poultry feathers (bad news for vegetarians) or human hair.

A 2011 news article claimed that in China most of the L-cysteine used in commercial baking is extracted from hair collected from the floors of barbershops and hairdressers.

A spokesperson for Food Standards Australia and New Zealand told media that the bi-national body was aware that L-cysteine is used in commercial baking.

“We are aware [it is] chemically synthesised or extracted from poultry feathers,” she said. “We’re not aware of it being sourced from human hair.”

The requirements of Kosher and Halal diets has led to the development of a process to create a synthetic form of L-cysteine, however this method is more expensive than deriving the food additive from organic sources.

Those who want to skip the poultry feathers in their bread should keep a look out for E920 or E921 in ingredients lists, or stick to products that are marked safe forvegetarians and vegans.

Hidden ingredients in food have been hitting headlines around the world in recent times. This month it was revealed that beef burgers sold by UK supermarket retailer Tesco contained horse DNA, now believed to have been traced to Polish suppliers.

MP red faced over Gillard tweet

Date
January 28, 2013 – 7:21PM

Queensland Coalition MP Andrew Laming caused controversy on Twitter for suggesting the Prime Minister was ignoring flood-stricken Queensland.

The member for Bowman, who has a history of making provocative statements on the social media network, said on Monday afternoon: “Tony Abbott at a Brisbane SES depot today. Where’s the PM?”

The Prime Minister was touring bushfire-affected parts of Victoria with Premier Ted Baillieu at the time, while Treasurer Wayne Swan visited flood-affected parts of Ipswich and Brisbane. In Brisbane, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott helped fill sandbags with council staff and volunteers at the Newmarket SES centre before visiting Brisbane Emergency Management Headquarters. “I want to say how impressed I am by the way the people of Brisbane have rallied behind each other in this crisis”, he said.

At a press conference in the Gippsland region, Ms Gillard told journalists she had spoken to Queensland Premier Campbell Newman and offered to provide assistance. “To the people of Queensland, we will be there working with you, alongside you as we face the consequences of this wild weather,” she said.

Ms Gillard offered her condolences to the friends and family of three people who had lost their lives. She urged people to stay safe by taking precautions, listening to warnings and not entering flood waters.

Dr. Laming’s tweet quickly drew negative reactions on the social network, with users condemning the remarks as inaccurate, insensitive and self-interested. Country independent Rob Oakeshott said “C’mon Andrew. Are you serious about that question? Its wet, its windy, its dangerous. Its a time to help where we can.”

Earlier in January, Dr Laming was condemned by the federal government for his comments on Twitter after clashes between Aboriginal and Pacific Islander communities south of Brisbane. “Mobs tearing up Logan tonight. Did any of them do a day’s work today, or was it business as usual and welfare on tap?” he said. He later issued a cl––arification through the social network, adding “To clarify: Working together to resolve these riots the priority. Training and a chance for jobs are key.”

The MP was roundly criticised with Trade Minister Craig Emerson calling on Tony Abbott to “have a frank conversation about whether Mr Laming is fit to continue in his role” as opposition spokesman for indigenous health. ‘

The MP’s Twitter account remained silent until late in the afternoon, with user Le Grace pointed out: “I think @AndrewLamingMP is now perfectly aware of the PM’s location.” Dr Laming has since tweeted: “Innocent question. PM to be commended for attending Vic bushfire areas.”

Five hurt in shootings at US gun shows

Date
January 20, 2013 – 1:38PM

Five people have been injured by accidental gunfire at three gun shows in the United States.

Authorities say three people were injured at a gun show in Raleigh, North Carolina.

A state agriculture department spokesman says a shotgun discharged as its owner unzipped its case for a law enforcement officer to check at a security entrance, injuring two bystanders and a retired deputy sheriff.

In Indiana, police say a 54-year-old man was injured when he accidentally shot himself while leaving a gun show.

And in Ohio a gun dealer was checking out a semi-automatic handgun he had bought when he accidentally pulled the trigger, injuring his friend.

Priest in pulpit after big payout

A LEADING Australian priest who sexually preyed on a disabled and vulnerable woman for 14 years has been allowed to return to preaching and running community groups at one of the nation’s busiest churches.

The recent decision by the Catholic Church to allow Father Tom Knowles to return to his full duties at St Francis’ Church in Melbourne’s CBD after around 16 months of ”administrative leave” has outraged his victim and victims’ groups.

Father Knowles’ reinstatement comes after the church apologised to Jennifer Herrick, paid her $100,000 in compensation and acknowledged ”the harm that can be caused to vulnerable people in such a case”.

Ms Herrick’s story highlights a rarely exposed facet of church abuse: vulnerable adult parishioners targeted by their priest for a sexual relationship. Psychologists say such relationships may be compared to a doctor who has sex with a vulnerable patient, and Australian Catholic University professor of theology Neil Ormerod believes there may be hundreds of similar cases yet to emerge.

Ms Herrick was a shy 19-year-old from NSW, who suffered from bilateral congenital hip dysplasia – which caused her to walk with an highly abnormal gait – when her family’s priest, Tom Knowles, cultivated a relationship with her. Ms Herrick’s later psychological reports say she was being groomed.

When Ms Herrick turned 22, Father Knowles, who was then 30, unexpectedly initiated intercourse with her, an act she describes as unpleasant and painful but one she felt powerless to stop due to his position. It was the first time Ms Herrick had ever had sex.

For the next 14 years, Father Knowles – who as a Catholic priest is meant to be celibate – maintained a secret sexual relationship with Ms Herrick.

”I now understand that my very severe vulnerability allowed him to exploit me by abusing his priestly powerful position for nearly two decades for his sexual needs,” she said.

In 2011, after she lodged a formal complaint, a confidential church investigation found his conduct to be highly inappropriate. Ms Herrick allowed Father Knowles to have sex with her during the 14-year period and told no one about it. She says the sex was often hurried, aggressive and sometimes painful. She withdrew from friends and family and grew increasingly anxious, ultimately having a breakdown and losing her career as a high school teacher.

”You feel you can’t say anything to anybody because he was a priest. When a young, disabled woman is caught up with a priest, you are trapped,” she said. ”I was denied an opportunity to develop normally as a young adult. I could never test out other relationships or have a family. It was a personal and pastoral betrayal.”

In a report, Ms Herrick’s psychologist, Ana Grant, said the priest’s conduct had caused Ms Herrick serious post-traumatic stress disorder and fell ”within the criteria for clergy perpetrated sexual abuse”. On September 27, 2011, Father Knowles’ boss, Father Graeme Duro, wrote to Ms Herrick acknowledging she had ”endured a great deal of emotional and psychological pain and suffering and that Fr Knowles’ inappropriate conduct was to your detriment”.

But in December 2012, a senior NSW church official, Michael Salmon, advised Ms Herrick’s lawyer in writing that Father Knowles had ”committed to a prolonged, regular and very intensive and personally confronting program of therapy” and he would ”return to full community life, and to public ministry”.

Ms Herrick described the decision as ”extremely distressing”.

Fairfax Media photographed Father Knowles preaching to parishioners last week at St Francis’, which hosts 10,000 parishioners a week. In his career, Father Knowles has been appointed as the head of an order and held other senior roles in NSW and Victoria.

Ms Herrick’s lawyer is Peter Karp, who has acted for many clergy sexual abuse victims. ”Vulnerable people in Jennifer’s position give their trust to a priest on the understanding that this trust will be returned,” he said. ”In this instance, the victim is so aggrieved, you would think that justice would demand that he be stood down permanently.”

Father Duro said in a statement this week that: ”We express our deep regret at the hurt suffered by the complainant and the harm Fr Knowles’ behaviour has caused his fellow religious and the church; we believe everything … to alleviate the complainant’s suffering and to address Fr Knowles’ responsibility for his actions has been done and it is appropriate for him to return to public ministry.”

Ms Herrick’s case falls outside of the royal commission on child sex abuse because she was 22 when the sexual relationship began.

“The adult victims [of clergy abuse] are voiceless victims,” Mr Karp said.

Professor Ormerod, who has supported Ms Herrick, said that in reinstating Father Knowles, the church sent a “signal to the victim that her situation wasn’t serious” when in fact the abuse of trust by the priest had been extensive.

He said he suspected the number of adults abused or in inappropriate relationships with their priests might be greater than the child abuse scandal.

Victims’ advocate Chris McIsaac, of Broken Rights, said: ”A psychiatrist who targeted a patient sexually could face deregistration, so why not a clergyman?”

Something’s fishy in imports

January 17, 2013, 6:18 pm Tineka Everaardt Today Tonight

Foreign fish imports are causing concerns with the national food regulator warning that a lot of the seafood is being treated with carbon monoxide.

‘Fresh’ fish being fixed with gas

Foreign fish imports are causing concerns with the national food regulator warning that a lot of seafood is being treated with carbon monoxide to make it appear fresh.

The gas gives the impression that the fish is fresh when it actually isn’t.

According to Food Standards Australia New Zealand fresh and frozen fish is being imported into Australia from Asia with an undisclosed foreign ingredient – carbon monoxide.

“It’s treated with a gas from a cylinder and then it’s wrapped, quite often frozen and imported to Australia,” spokesperson for Food Standards Australia New Zealand, Lorraine Belanger said.

Chances are you’ve unknowingly eaten fish treated with the chemical, which makes it look fresher than it really is.

“This has the potential to mislead some consumers because the fish might be older than it is implied by its colour,” Belanger said.

100 tonnes of tuna treated with carbon monoxide are imported each month from South East Asia – it’s currently perfectly legal but that could soon change.

Super foods to eat daily

In 1995 the European Union banned carbon monoxide and now Food Standards Australia New Zealand wants to follow suit. They’re preparing a report which aims to ban the import of fish which is processed using the so called ‘flushing method’.

“Chemical changes can occur in the fish that might create a food safety issue,” Belanger said.

The concern is that people will eat off fish, which could lead to food poisoning.

Today Tonight’s latest food stories

Children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are the most at risk.

Chris Gambrellis has sold flushed fish to Melbourne restaurants and hotels for the past four years. He says “the carbon monoxide does give it a good appearance, it’s a bright colour. We have comments people refer to it as fluorescent. We get a longer shelf life out of it.”

Gambrellis says “the ones that use the flushing technique (are) the barramundi, the yellowfin tuna, the swordfish, the marlin, mahi mahi.”

More stories from reporter Tineka Everaardt

Australians have an insatiable appetite for seafood. Each year we consume 193,000 tonnes of it and 72 per cent of that is imported. Thailand, New Zealand, Vietnam and China are our biggest providers.

“The benefits are the costing, the shelf life as well, and supply – consistent supply,” Gambrellis said.

Despite all this and the cheaper prices, fishmonger Angelo Christopoulos says he always chooses Aussie produce over imports.

“The majority of people who come here want Australian produce,” Christopoulos said.

Food Standards Australia says its proposal to ban the use of carbon monoxide flushing in fish should be complete by the end of this year.

Baillieu’s Government’s operations should be the subject of a royal commission!

I believe Ted Baillieu’s Government’s operations should be the subject of a royal commission! This government, has cut support for Health, Education, Welfare, and Police services, which seem to me, to be the prime responsibilities of a government.

Yet this fuckwit, and his minister’s have only seen fit to pump billions of dollars of state revenue, into useless projects, projects that will not improve the lot, of any Victorian, except, his mates!

This man, and his government, should be brought before a royal commission, to explain his weird spending patterns.

The item below, is just one example of Baillieu’s illegal activities!

This is public, taxpayer’s funds, he is criminally misusing!

Baillieu hides project costs

VICTORIAN taxpayers will be left in the dark over the cost of high-profile infrastructure projects such as an east-west road link under a sweeping overhaul of the state’s tendering regime quietly announced by the Baillieu government.

A statement on the Victorian economy released by Premier Ted Baillieu just days before Christmas reveals the government will ”no longer disclose” the cost of major projects when they are announced.

The public will effectively be denied information on the estimated cost of major projects for months, potentially years, until business contracts have been finalised.

The new rules are designed to introduce a fresh layer of competition into the tendering process because rival companies competing for major projects would not be able to calibrate their bids against the government’s cost estimates.

”This will improve the competitive tension in the tender process and encourage more active price competition between bidders,” the statement said.

But the rules have sparked concern taxpayers will have even less ability to scrutinise spending on major projects, which are shielded by commercial-in-confidence provisions.

Opposition scrutiny-of-government spokesman Martin Pakula accused Mr Baillieu of attempting to convince Victorians he could deliver major projects on budget ”by never telling us what the initial budget is”.

”I would expect the new Auditor-General would take a very dim view of this assault on transparency when the position is filled,” Mr Pakula said.

Treasurer Kim Wells said publicly disclosing the project budget had the potential to limit competition by giving potential bidders ”a reasonable indication of the government’s estimate of construction costs”.

”Labor often made political announcements about projects well in advance of the development of a business case, jeopardising the state’s ability to obtain maximum value for money and leading to cost blowouts,” Mr Wells said.

The overhaul follows repeated warnings, including from within the Treasury Department, that businesses bidding for big contracts use announcements as a benchmark when tendering.

A November 2011 investigation by the Ombudsman into bungled information technology contracts by the former government warned that public announcements about funding had resulted in projects being ”shoe-horned” and rushed to fit the budget allocation.

Sources have also warned that state government departments have been suspected of ”gaming” the system by overstating the expected cost of projects to increase budget allocations.

The changes – with funding for most major projects likely to be obscured in the budget as ”unallocated capital” – follow a report by the Victorian Auditor-General that found 24 major projects managed over the past 12 years cost an average of 18 per cent more than expected.

The Audit Office has been pushing for so-called ”follow-the-dollar powers”, which would allow it to scrutinise contracts shielded by commercial-in-confidence provisions.

Outgoing Auditor Des Pearson used his final annual report to warn that his ability to scrutinise taxpayer-funded projects had ”diminished rapidly”. He also warned that the coherence of the state’s integrity system would remain in doubt until the changes were introduced.

When in opposition, Mr Baillieu railed against what was seen as a lack of accountability in tendering for government contracts, saying it was important to make the process ”really transparent”.

Aspartame is, by Far, the Most Dangerous Substance on the Market that is Added To Foods

November 06, 2011

Aspartame is the technical name for the brand names NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, and Equal-Measure. It was discovered by accident in 1965 when James Schlatter, a chemist of G.D. Searle Company, was testing an anti-ulcer drug.

What you don't know WILL hurt you. Find out the dangerous effects of artificial sweeteners to your health.Aspartame was approved for dry goods in 1981 and for carbonated beverages in 1983. It was originally approved for dry goods on July 26, 1974, but objections filed by neuroscience researcher Dr John W. Olney and Consumer attorney James Turner in August 1974 as well as investigations of G.D. Searle’s research practices caused the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to put approval of aspartame on hold (December 5, 1974). In 1985, Monsanto purchased G.D. Searle and made Searle Pharmaceuticals and The NutraSweet Company separate subsidiaries.

Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death. A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.

According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame: Brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson’s disease, alzheimer’s, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes.

Aspartame is made up of three chemicals: aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol. The book “Prescription for Nutritional Healing,” by James and Phyllis Balch, lists aspartame under the category of “chemical poison.” As you shall see, that is exactly what it is.

What Is Aspartame Made Of?

Aspartic Acid (40 percent of Aspartame)

Dr. Russell L. Blaylock, a professor of neurosurgery at the Medical University of Mississippi, recently published a book thoroughly detailing the damage that is caused by the ingestion of excessive aspartic acid from aspartame. Blaylock makes use of almost 500 scientific references to show how excess free excitatory amino acids such as aspartic acid and glutamic acid (about 99 percent of monosodium glutamate (MSG) is glutamic acid) in our food supply are causing serious chronic neurological disorders and a myriad of other acute symptoms.

How Aspartate (and Glutamate) Cause Damage

aspartateAspartate and glutamate act as neurotransmitters in the brain by facilitating the transmission of information from neuron to neuron. Too much aspartate or glutamate in the brain kills certain neurons by allowing the influx of too much calcium into the cells. This influx triggers excessive amounts of free radicals, which kill the cells. The neural cell damage that can be caused by excessive aspartate and glutamate is why they are referred to as “excitotoxins.” They “excite” or stimulate the neural cells to death.

Aspartic acid is an amino acid. Taken in its free form (unbound to proteins) it significantly raises the blood plasma level of aspartate and glutamate. The excess aspartate and glutamate in the blood plasma shortly after ingesting aspartame or products with free glutamic acid (glutamate precursor) leads to a high level of those neurotransmitters in certain areas of the brain.

The blood brain barrier (BBB), which normally protects the brain from excess glutamate and aspartate as well as toxins, 1) is not fully developed during childhood, 2) does not fully protect all areas of the brain, 3) is damaged by numerous chronic and acute conditions, and 4) allows seepage of excess glutamate and aspartate into the brain even when intact.

The excess glutamate and aspartate slowly begin to destroy neurons. The large majority (75 percent or more) of neural cells in a particular area of the brain are killed before any clinical symptoms of a chronic illness are noticed. A few of the many chronic illnesses that have been shown to be contributed to by long-term exposure to excitatory amino acid damage include:

  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • ALS
  • Memory loss
  • Hormonal problems
  • Hearing loss
  • Epilepsy
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Hypoglycemia
  • AIDS
  • Dementia
  • Brain lesions
  • Neuroendocrine disorders

The risk to infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly and persons with certain chronic health problems from excitotoxins are great. Even the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), which usually understates problems and mimics the FDA party-line, recently stated in a review that:

“It is prudent to avoid the use of dietary supplements of L-glutamic acid by pregnant women, infants, and children. The existence of evidence of potential endocrine responses, i.e., elevated cortisol and prolactin, and differential responses between males and females, would also suggest a neuroendocrine link and that supplemental L-glutamic acid should be avoided by women of childbearing age and individuals with affective disorders.”

Aspartic acid from aspartame has the same deleterious effects on the body as glutamic acid.

The exact mechanism of acute reactions to excess free glutamate and aspartate is currently being debated. As reported to the FDA, those reactions include:

aspartame effect

    • Headaches/migraines
    • Nausea
    • Abdominal pains
    • Fatigue (blocks sufficient glucose entry into brain)
    • Sleep problems
    • Vision problems
    • Anxiety attacks
    • Depression
    • Asthma/chest tigShtness.

One common complaint of persons suffering from the effect of aspartame is memory loss. Ironically, in 1987, G.D. Searle, the manufacturer of aspartame, undertook a search for a drug to combat memory loss caused by excitatory amino acid damage. Blaylock is one of many scientists and physicians who are concerned about excitatory amino acid damage caused by ingestion of aspartame and MSG.

A few of the many experts who have spoken out against the damage being caused by aspartate and glutamate include Adrienne Samuels, Ph.D., an experimental psychologist specializing in research design. Another is Olney, a professor in the department of psychiatry, School of Medicine, Washington University, a neuroscientist and researcher, and one of the world’s foremost authorities on excitotoxins. (He informed Searle in 1971 that aspartic acid caused holes in the brains of mice.)

Phenylalanine (50 percent of aspartame)

Don't let artificial sweeteners fool you! Order now and find out the risks of using aspartame.Phenylalanine is an amino acid normally found in the brain. Persons with the genetic disorder phenylketonuria (PKU) cannot metabolize phenylalanine. This leads to dangerously high levels of phenylalanine in the brain (sometimes lethal). It has been shown that ingesting aspartame, especially along with carbohydrates, can lead to excess levels of phenylalanine in the brain even in persons who do not have PKU.

This is not just a theory, as many people who have eaten large amounts of aspartame over a long period of time and do not have PKU have been shown to have excessive levels of phenylalanine in the blood. Excessive levels of phenylalanine in the brain can cause the levels of seratonin in the brain to decrease, leading to emotional disorders such as depression. It was shown in human testing that phenylalanine levels of the blood were increased significantly in human subjects who chronically used aspartame.

Even a single use of aspartame raised the blood phenylalanine levels. In his testimony before the U.S. Congress, Dr. Louis J. Elsas showed that high blood phenylalanine can be concentrated in parts of the brain and is especially dangerous for infants and fetuses. He also showed that phenylalanine is metabolised much more effeciently by rodents than by humans.

One account of a case of extremely high phenylalanine levels caused by aspartame was recently published the “Wednesday Journal” in an article titled “An Aspartame Nightmare.” John Cook began drinking six to eight diet drinks every day. His symptoms started out as memory loss and frequent headaches. He began to crave more aspartame-sweetened drinks. His condition deteriorated so much that he experienced wide mood swings and violent rages. Even though he did not suffer from PKU, a blood test revealed a phenylalanine level of 80 mg/dl. He also showed abnormal brain function and brain damage. After he kicked his aspartame habit, his symptoms improved dramatically.

As Blaylock points out in his book, early studies measuring phenylalanine buildup in the brain were flawed. Investigators who measured specific brain regions and not the average throughout the brain notice significant rises in phenylalanine levels. Specifically the hypothalamus, medulla oblongata, and corpus striatum areas of the brain had the largest increases in phenylalanine. Blaylock goes on to point out that excessive buildup of phenylalanine in the brain can cause schizophrenia or make one more susceptible to seizures.

Therefore, long-term, excessive use of aspartame may provid a boost to sales of seratonin reuptake inhibitors such as Prozac and drugs to control schizophrenia and seizures.

Methanol (aka wood alcohol/poison) (10 percent of aspartame)

Methanol/wood alcohol is a deadly poison. Some people may remember methanol as the poison that has caused some “skid row” alcoholics to end up blind or dead. Methanol is gradually released in the small intestine when the methyl group of aspartame encounter the enzyme chymotrypsin.

The absorption of methanol into the body is sped up considerably when free methanol is ingested. Free methanol is created from aspartame when it is heated to above 86 Fahrenheit (30 Centigrade). This would occur when aspartame-containing product is improperly stored or when it is heated (e.g., as part of a “food” product such as Jello).

methanolMethanol breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde in the body. Formaldehyde is a deadly neurotoxin. An EPA assessment of methanol states that methanol “is considered a cumulative poison due to the low rate of excretion once it is absorbed. In the body, methanol is oxidized to formaldehyde and formic acid; both of these metabolites are toxic.” They recommend a limit of consumption of 7.8 mg/day. A one-liter (approx. 1 quart) aspartame-sweetened beverage contains about 56 mg of methanol. Heavy users of aspartame-containing products consume as much as 250 mg of methanol daily or 32 times the EPA limit.

Symptoms from methanol poisoning include headaches, ear buzzing, dizziness, nausea, gastrointestinal disturbances, weakness, vertigo, chills, memory lapses, numbness and shooting pains in the extremities, behavioral disturbances, and neuritis. The most well known problems from methanol poisoning are vision problems including misty vision, progressive contraction of visual fields, blurring of vision, obscuration of vision, retinal damage, and blindness. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, causes retinal damage, interferes with DNA replication and causes birth defects.

Due to the lack of a couple of key enzymes, humans are many times more sensitive to the toxic effects of methanol than animals. Therefore, tests of aspartame or methanol on animals do not accurately reflect the danger for humans. As pointed out by Dr. Woodrow C. Monte, director of the food science and nutrition laboratory at Arizona State University, “There are no human or mammalian studies to evaluate the possible mutagenic, teratogenic or carcinogenic effects of chronic administration of methyl alcohol.”

He was so concerned about the unresolved safety issues that he filed suit with the FDA requesting a hearing to address these issues. He asked the FDA to “slow down on this soft drink issue long enough to answer some of the important questions. It’s not fair that you are leaving the full burden of proof on the few of us who are concerned and have such limited resources. You must remember that you are the American public’s last defense. Once you allow usage (of aspartame) there is literally nothing I or my colleagues can do to reverse the course. Aspartame will then join saccharin, the sulfiting agents, and God knows how many other questionable compounds enjoined to insult the human constitution with governmental approval.” Shortly thereafter, the Commissioner of the FDA, Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr., approved the use of aspartame in carbonated beverages, he then left for a position with G.D. Searle’s public relations firm.

It has been pointed out that some fruit juices and alcoholic beverages contain small amounts of methanol. It is important to remember, however, that methanol never appears alone. In every case, ethanol is present, usually in much higher amounts. Ethanol is an antidote for methanol toxicity in humans. The troops of Desert Storm were “treated” to large amounts of aspartame-sweetened beverages, which had been heated to over 86 degrees F in the Saudi Arabian sun. Many of them returned home with numerous disorders similar to what has been seen in persons who have been chemically poisoned by formaldehyde. The free methanol in the beverages may have been a contributing factor in these illnesses. Other breakdown products of aspartame such as DKP (discussed below) may also have been a factor.

In a 1993 act that can only be described as “unconscionable,” the FDA approved aspartame as an ingredient in numerous food items that would always be heated to above 86 degree F (30 degree C).

Diketopiperazine (DKP)

DKP is a byproduct of aspartame metabolism. DKP has been implicated in the occurrence of brain tumors. Olney noticed that DKP, when nitrosated in the gut, produced a compound that was similar to N-nitrosourea, a powerful brain tumor causing chemical. Some authors have said that DKP is produced after aspartame ingestion. I am not sure if that is correct. It is definitely true that DKP is formed in liquid aspartame-containing products during prolonged storage.

G.D. Searle conducted animal experiments on the safety of DKP. The FDA found numerous experimental errors occurred, including “clerical errors, mixed-up animals, animals not getting drugs they were supposed to get, pathological specimens lost because of improper handling,” and many other errors. These sloppy laboratory procedures may explain why both the test and control animals had sixteen times more brain tumors than would be expected in experiments of this length.

In an ironic twist, shortly after these experimental errors were discovered, the FDA used guidelines recommended by G.D. Searle to develop the industry-wide FDA standards for good laboratory practices.

DKP has also been implicated as a cause of uterine polyps and changes in blood cholesterol by FDA Toxicologist Dr. Jacqueline Verrett in her testimony before the U.S. Senate.
